Short Interview as wedding photographer in wedding planner’s Blog.

Perennial wedding just published a short interview of Toh Gouttenoire on their new blog, it is part of the WQS (Wednesday Question Session)… I’m excited to start working with this new wedding planning company, Kristina is a great and creative wedding planner… I know I’ll get some great details shots with her…

Toh has been doing photography for about 15 years, both commercially and now for weddings. He lives in Tamarindo with his family and we thoroughly enjoy working with him!

What do you do? I capture moments and create images.

Where are you from? Born and raised in the center of good old Europe: France.

Who are you in 5 words? Image lover creative curious photographer

What is your style? I guess it is either documentary or carefully crafted funky photography.

What is your favorite part of a wedding? Why? Just after the ceremony, when all the stress is down, people totally relax and just appreciate the moment they are living, not anymore the anticipation of it.

What do you find to be the most memorable about a wedding? Well, the fact that it happened…

What is a tip you would like to give brides and grooms about weddings? Relax… take it easy, especially if you are in Costa Rica… Enjoy the moment don’t ruin it with unnecessary stress, don’t be a BrideZilla, be a Pura Vida Bride…

In a few sentences, as to not bore us , what brought you to Costa Rica? A travel habit fueled by curiosity. I have visited a lot of countries but fell in love with Costa Rica.

What is your favorite place in Costa Rica. Why? Tamarindo and surroundings of course (I live there…), for the beautiful bay, beach and waves, but also for the crazy multicultural community living here.

What do you love about your line of work? Almost everything, how can’t you love being on the beach or other beautiful settings, taking photographs of happy people who give you their trust… honestly…

Tell me something, anything. My daughter is the most intelligent and beautiful girl in the world… and nothing beats a real baguette sandwich with butter and cornichons…

When I discovered the "trash the dress" style and scene, it was like a real oxygen bubble, it opens a lot of new doors, opportunities and pleasure for me as a photographer and business owner… As I am shooting a lot of destination wedding down here in Costa Rica, the customers are maybe more appealed by something different than what they can imagine or accept home… Also we have such wonderful, crazy, exotic spot that it make the shooting a delight for me, and for them… really a win win… I'll post more of those in the coming days…

Holly and Todd will get married here at the Langosta Beach Club in March 2011, they came beforehand to have a feeling of Tamarindo and Costa Rica, they decided to have a session on the beach, we had a beautiful morning with just enough clouds for keeping the sun not to hot and diffuse it it nicely…

An intimate wedding kind of improvised…

Holly and Erich knew they wanted their destination wedding in Costa Rica, they also knew they wanted to stay in Tamarindo but that was it, no plan for the ceremony, no wedding planner… When they asked me if I knew a beautiful and quiet spot, I thought straight about the Langosta Beach Club… Still on Tamarindo beach but far from the “crowded” part of the beach…

The ceremony was simple and emotional and we add fun with the afterward session… great moments…

Selecting a photographer via Internet and email was not a simple task. I spent hours searching through on line portfolios. International calling with a language barrier was just as daunting. When I spoke with Toh on the phone I realized he was the one for a few reasons in particular: His personality was energetic and creative. He understood my vision for unique photos. He always answered questions in a timely manner. Put simply, he made long distance planning easy.

A really relax and fun elopement at the Tamarindo Diria with Jaclyn and David, also the first time I was shooting a wedding at 10 AM… Being the rainy season, the newly weds to be were preoccupied by the possibility of the classic afternoon shower of this season… so we end up on the beach at 11 am under the hard light of a super hot sun… but it gave me something different than the usual (but always amazing) sunset… The little wind help us…

-The “Trash the dress” style seems to be all fashion these days in wedding photography all over the world, Costa Rica is no exception

Here how wikipedia defines it:

Trash the dress, also known as fearless bridal or rock the frock, is a style of wedding photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion and glamour photography.

Usually brides decide to have pictures taken on a beach, but other locations include city streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings.

Some sources claim that the trend was originally started in 2001 by Las Vegas wedding photographer John Michael Cooper^[1]. However, the idea of destroying a wedding dress has been used in Hollywood symbolically since at least October 1998 when Meg Cummings of the show Sunset Beach ran into the ocean in her wedding dress after her wedding was badly interrupted. Since then the style has spread around the world and most notably in the UK, with photographers like Steve Gerrard^[2] and Mark Theisinger^[3], amongst others, shoot their unique ideas of Trash the Dress.

A model often wears a ball gown, prom dress or wedding dress, and may effectively ruin the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty or in extreme circumstances tearing or destroying the garment.

It may be done as an additional shoot after the wedding, almost as a declaration that the wedding is done and the dress will not be used again. It is seen as an alternative to storing the dress away, never to be seen again.

The facts that we have beautiful beaches, dusty roads and dark mangroves helps a lot…
